I was thinking the other day, what are a few benefits of having your child help you in the kitchen?
I came up with a few:
~ Try and eat more vegetables
How many times have we heard "I don't like that" or "I don't like green things", When children help us in the kitchen and help us pick out produce at the market it entices them to try new things. Children that help with the preparation of their dinner or any meal are more likely to try these new foods
~ Healthier diet and lifestyle
I know we are all busy! It's easier to pick up fast food or something in the frozen section at the market. Instead, when you are at the market, ask them to help pick out they're favorite fruit. What kind of vegetable would they like to try.
When we offer fresh fruits and vegetables to our children they are getting a healthier diet.
They are able to work better at school and in athletic sports
~ Improve Hand and Eye Coordination
Cutting/ Mixing/Grating and adding ingredients helps with improving our child's hand and eye coordination. Young children can help with washing fruits and vegetables, adding and mixing ingredients and yes, they can even participate in with cutting and slicing, with your help and a 'child friendly' knife. Of course they can help with setting the table. Older children can help with chopping vegetables, and prep work in the kitchen.
~ Tech Free Quality Family Time
It's time to put down the cell phone, iPad and the X-Box and sit down to a family dinner. With so many busy lifestyles it is great to have one meal together and to ask questions about our day. I remember when my children were younger we would sit down at least once a week and we would go around the table and say a "happy" and "sad" about our day. This is a great ice breaker to start a conversation with your family. When we sit down to a meal, together, our children have a chance to learn about family traditions and stories
~ Learning new skills
Improving their motor skills start with preparing soft foods that they can add/mix/grate/cut with plastic scissors or child-friendly knives. What about math skills? When you talk about a recipe, your child will learn number recognition, basic sums, and learn about weights and measures. Working in the kitchen also encourages your child to read a recipe, ask them to read it to you, ask them questions that spark their imagination. For instance: How do they think the food will look? how will it taste? or how it will smell? These are skills for reading and comprehension. Certainly they will be increase their vocabulary by using descriptive words in describing how the food looks, smells while the food is cooking.
There is so much more. By having fun and getting messy in the kitchen with your children they won't actually realize they are being taught a skill. Our children can learn new words , simple math, time and communication skills and most of all you are giving them a life long skill by having them help you prepare a meal.
MIX MATH, SIMMER SCIENCE AND TASTE FUN!

We had an exciting second session of Summer Cooking Camp at Simi Rancho Parks and Recreation Center! What an exciting group of kids we had for the week. They were so excited to learn some fun facts about the countries we visited along with cooking up some great food!
These kids are awesome at cutting, chopping and dicing our veggies for our Veggie Quesadillas and mixed up some great flavors together for our Mango Salsa! These were just a few of the items we cooked or baked at camp!
Ask your kids about some of the fun facts they learned about Israel and the Dead Sea,, where the first pizza came from and some words in Spanish, Hebrew and Italian.
We culminated the week with Restaurant Day with the children serving their parents with samples of the food that we made during the week.
Thank you for joining Lil Chef's at Simi Parks and hope to see you all in Sept.
We just finished our last session of summer classes! What another GREAT group of kids. Even though it has been so HOT, we still enjoyed chopping, mixing and baking up a storm of great food from different countries.
The kids had a great time when we "visited" Israel, they learned to make some Peanut Butter Hummus. That's right I said .. Peanut Butter Hummus (just check out the section on Food We Love to Cook for the recipe) and Pita Chips. We also baked up some delicious Chocolate Chip Rugelach. Yum Yum! These were just a few of the fun foods we made.
Please look for more classes in the Fall at Simi Parks and Recreation Center and Oak Park
Second Session will be July 9-12. More to come!
Come and Join the fun at Rancho Simi Parks and Recreation Center. Lil Chef's will be holding a a One Week Summer Camp (June 11-14 and July 9-12) Go to www.rsrpd.org to register.
Cooking Round the World is the juncture where cultural exploration meets culinary arts!
Each camp day we cook and eat 2 to 4 recipes, read a folktale, play an international/national game, observe a cooking demonstration, and learn to think critically about the foods we just cooked.
The program is completely hands-on; everyone peels or chops or dices or minces. We believe in cooking with whole foods and having the children do the prep work themselves.
Hope to see you soon
